Coco painting practice is concerned with memory of place, places real and imaginary, as well as traces from her everyday surroundings. These memories and perceptions are transferred onto the canvas. Hewitt’s paintings shift between subject and material. Her gestural painterly technique frequently moves towards abstraction. Hewitt is interested in the physical three dimensional nature of paint, she questions what the material can do and follows its trace. There is an expressive use of colour built up in a series of layers to create depth and texture.
